This is an important lesson that many athletes fail to learn. Pain is your body telling you that something is wrong. You need to learn to listen beyond that though. Are you dealing with a dull, consistent pain or a pain that is sharp and occurs only with certain movements? The distinction is an important one, and can tell you if you’re injured or just hurting. If you’re ever unsure, seek help from the team medical staff or with your primary physician. Safety comes first, and you don’t want to risk further injury.
It’s OK To Seek Help
Too many athletes think that they are proving their mettle or helping the team by not seeking ways to help with their pain. This shouldn’t be about your pride: it should be about keeping your body at peak performance for as long as possible. Pain patches and other health and well-being treatments are not a sign of weakness, they are a sign of intelligence.
You deserve to be able to play your favorite sports without limitation. Pain is an inevitable part of being an athlete; but it shouldn’t sideline you. Keep the above information in mind when treating yourself, and you should be good to go for as long as you want to play.
